Dredging of the Estuary West of Ocean Dr Bridge
The heavily silted sections of the Lake Cathie estuary west of Ocean Drive Bridge are severely restricting use by fishers, residents and visitors. This also reduces the flushing capacity of the lake when the entrance is open.
On July 27 2011 Port Macquarie-Hastings Council adopted the following recommendation:
“That no dredging works be undertaken between the Ocean Drive Bridge and the Kenwood Drive Bridge. That dredging works be limited to removal of sediment from the entrance downstream of the Ocean Drive bridge.”
In effect this means NO DREDGING WEST OF THE BRIDGE.
Studies commissioned by Council made recommendations re the siltation west of the Bridge. One example being:
GHD in 2004 recommended that “A full EIS should be immediately prepared for future dredging of the lake upstream from Ocean Dr Bridge”. This was not implemented.
Following the 2009 fish kill the Lake Cathie Progress Association’s Annual General Meeting unanimously adopted an Estuary Policy which included “Dredging of the area upstream of the Ocean Drive Bridge to increase water depth”.
The meeting stressed the urgency for action to prevent future fish kills. Increased water depth would also give better flushing of the lake when the entrance is open.
Lake Cathie (pronounced ‘cat-eye’) is a small resort and fishing village, is just 12km south of the major mid-north coastal town, Port Macquarie. This peaceful lakeside village, only minutes from a surf beach, is the perfect holiday setting and a family-friendly place to live.
Lake Cathie is a self-contained community on the shores of a warm shallow, tidal lagoon. Located behind a wide, uncluttered surfing beach, the lake provides recreational fishing, boating and swimming. Lake Cathie's large saltwater lake is the second largest estuarine salt march area in NSW.
Periodically opened to the sea, the lake is ideal for young children and there are lots of picnic tables and BBQs around the shore. Venture up to the northern headland where a fantastic forest walk has been established with a viewing platform offering fabulous views across the lake and the ocean.
